Thousands of Egyptians were
tonight reoccupying Cairo’s
Tahrir Square in outrage at
the “leniency” shown to jailed
ex-president Hosni Mubarak.
Mubarak, 84, who faced a
death sentence, and former
interior minister Habib al-Adly
were instead given life terms
for complicity in the killing of
850 protesters in last year’s
uprising.
But six former police chiefs
were acquitted and Mubarak
and his sons cleared of
corruption.
Their sentences will be
challenged.
Mubarak is the first former
leader tried in person since
the start of the Arab Spring
in early 2011.

Egypt’s former president ­
suffered “a health crisis”
when he found he was being
taken to a prison hospital
instead of the military one
where he had been staying
during his trial.
Frail Mubarak said he felt too
ill to move when he arrived by
helicopter at the jail hospital
and refused to get off.
The sons were cleared of ­
corruption but still face other
charges. Ex-interior minister
Habib el-Adly and six regime ­
officials also got life.
Police pushed crowds back as ­
Mubarak was taken to the ­
helicopter. He was ousted in
the uprising centred on
Cairo’s Tahrir Square where
the massacre took place.
Egypt votes in two weeks for
a new president, a contest
between Mubarak ally Ahmed
Shafiq and Muslim Brotherhood
leader Mohammed Morsi.
