Goodluck
Jonathan in following due
process has sent a letter to
the Senate, seeking their
approval in renaming the
University of Lagos.
The letter which was read on
the floor of the senate by the
senate president, David Mark,
asked the approval for the
name change of Federal
University of Technology
Umudike to Michael Okpara
University of Agriculture ,
Umudike; Federal Univeristy of
Technology, Yola to Modibbo
Adamawa University and
University of Lagos to
Moshood Abiola University,
Lagos.
Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture, Umudike was
renamed in 2000 under the
administration of former
President Olusegun Obasanjo
while Federal University of
Technology, Yola was renamed
on October 1, 2011.
Jonathan is seeking senate
approval after changing the
name of University of Lagos; a
university created by
parliamentary law to Moshood
Abiola University on Democracy
Day, May 29.
His announcement sparked
series of protests by students
of the institution who took to
the streets demanding their
brand name of Unilag
(University of Lagos) back. The
acting vice chancellor of the
university had denied
knowledge of the president’s
actions while former Nigerian
head of state, Gen. Yakubu
Gowon said the decision was
made without due
consultations.
The public were not left out
as majority disapproved of
the president’s actions
revealing that the nation had
more pressing issues to deal
with than the renaming of a
university and the unrest
that stemmed as a result of
it.
The students of the
institution had taken the case
a tad further by suing the
federal government.
