(AGI) Abuja- Clashes broke out in a cattle market in Potiskum in north-eastern Nigeria, leaving at least 60 dead. The tally was announced by local media citing hospital sources but police reported 34. The violence began on Wednesday night and ended towards dawn on Thursday. The tragedy was not the result of a terrorist attack like those already seen on numerous occasions in the Potiskum area and in the Yobe region. The event was triggered by a failed attempt of cattle theft: on Wednesday night four thieves for found by cattle merchants and one of them was captured; the man was doused with fuel, trapped in tires (a typical mass execution method in Nigeria) and set on fire. The man's accomplices launched a reprisal a few hours later. Ten men surrounded the market, blocked the exits and proceeded to open fire and throw bombs on the crowd, leading to mass panic; the criminals then set the market itself on fire.
Many victims were wounded, some seriously. . .
