Harcourt (UNIPORT), said
that the PDP

polled a total of 417,500
to emerge the winner of
the governorship poll.According to him,
“Dickson Henry Seriake,
having satisfied the
requirement of the law by
scoring the highest
number of votes, is
hereby declared the
winner of the
governorship election in
Bayelsa State and
returned elected.”
While the Action
Congress of Nigeria
(ACN) polled a total of
9,627 votes, Congress
for Progressive Change
(CPC) polled 22,534 votes
and the CPC, 3,548
votes, results indicated
that the PDP won in all
the eight local
governments that make
up the state.
Commenting on the
conduct of the poll,
Bayelsa State
Commissioner of Police,
Mr Chris Olakpe,
described the exercise
as peaceful, stressing
that effective security
and surveillance were
put in place which
facilitated the conduct of
the poll.
Meanwhile, the
governor-elect of
Bayelsa State,
Honourable Dickson, has
described his victory at
the governorship poll as
a dawn of a new
beginning for Bayelsa
State and the Ijaw nation.
He assured the people
that he would not let them
down by entrenching
good governance and
ensuring quicker
transformation of Bayelsa
State, through the
restoration agenda.
Reacting to the outcome
of the poll announced by
Professor Ajineka,
Dickson said that “I want
to congratulate all
Bayelsans, for this is a
great dawn for new
beginning. I also want to
thank them for their
peaceful conduct.”
Continuing, he remarked
that “I want to commend
INEC for doing a thorough
job and the security
agencies for their
painstaking efforts. This
is the most peaceful
election we have
witnessed in this state.
We have proved to the
world that contrary to
speculation, we are not a
violent people.”
Said Dickson: “I want to
assure all those who
contested against me,
their political parties,
including my opponents at
the primaries that
today’s victory is for all
us. We are all winners
and not losers by this
declaration.
Yesterday, we may have
been opponents in this
election, but with the
declaration by INEC, we
are all winners. I invite
them all to participate in
the rebuilding of a
greater and more
prosperous Bayelsa for
our people and future
generation.”
Also, President Goodluck
Jonathan has thanked
the people of his home
state, Bayelsa, for voting
overwhelmingly for his
party, the PDP in
Saturday’s governorship
election.
Attributing the
resounding victory to the
party’s candidate,
Honourable Dickson, to
the support of the
people, he also
congratulated Dickson
and his running mate,
Rear Admiral John Jonah
(retd), on their
emergence as governor-
elect and deputy
governor-elect of
Bayelsa State.
A statement issued by
the Special Adviser to the
President on Media and
Publicity, Dr Reuben
Abati, in Abuja on Sunday
noted that Jonathan
admonished that as they
prepared to assume
office at the helm of
governance in Bayelsa
State, they should fully
dedicate their tenure to
giving effective,
purposeful and result-
oriented leadership to
the people of the state
who clearly reaffirmed
their confidence in the
PDP on Saturday.
It said Jonathan expected
Dickson and his incoming
administration to work
with total dedication and
commitment to justify the
people’s confidence by
rapidly delivering visible
and significant
improvements in the
living conditions of
residents of the state.
The president assured
the governor-elect of the
full support, assistance
and cooperation of the
Federal Government and
prayed that God Almighty
would grant him a very
successful tenure as
governor of Bayelsa
State.
In another development,
President of the Senate,
Senator David Mark has
sent a message of
congratulation to the
Bayelsa State governor-
elect and his running
mate over the victory at
Saturday’s gubernatorial
polls.
Senator Mark, in the
message, implored the
duo to rise up to the
challenge of massive
infrastructural
development of the entire
state in dire need of
uplift.
According to Mark, “You
should rise up to the
challenge of even
development of the state.
That is the sure way of
building trust and
confidence in your
administration. You must
bring honour and pride to
the people of Bayelsa in
particular and Nigerians
at large.
“With this victory, you
have a sacred mandate
to lead the state to
greater heights. As a
father to all the citizens
of the state, you should
bring everybody on
board and ensure that no
part of the state feels a
sense of
marginalisation.”
He, therefore, advised
other political parties and
their candidates who lost
at the poll to accept the
outcome in good fate as
the desire and wishes of
the majority of
Bayelsans.
The president of the
Senate asked them to
join hands with the
governor-elect in
development of the state
in the overall interest of
all.
Also, Speaker of the
House of
Representatives,
Honourable Aminu
Tambuwal, on Sunday
congratulated Honourable
Dickson on his election as
the governor-elect of
Bayelsa State.
In a statement issued in
Abuja and signed by his
Special Adviser on Media
and Public Affairs, Imam
Imam, Honourable
Tambuwal said “with
Dickson’s emergence, the
people of Bayelsa will no
doubt benefit from the
new governor’s
experience and
administrative acumen.”
He then urged the people
of the state to support
him, to enable him to fulfill
his campaign promises.
While urging the
governor-elect to work
towards uniting the state
chapter of the PDP, the
speaker equally tasked
the leaders and
supporters of the party
to rally round their
governor, for him to
realise his objectives for
the party and the state.
The statement also
quoted the speaker as
saying: “the people of
Bayelsa have made the
right choice. I, on behalf
of the members of the
House of
Representatives,
congratulate Honourable
Dickson and wish him a
fruitful tenure.”
