
The management of
Channels Television said,
yesterday, it was
saddened by the tragic
loss of its Kano State
correspondent, Enenche
Godwin Akogwu, who was
shot by unknown gunmen
suspected to be members
of Boko Haram in Kano.
According to a statement,
Akogwu, who doubled as
a reporter and
cameraman, was on
official duty covering the
multiple explosions in
Kano, when he was
attacked by members of
the sect opposite the
State Government House.
Enenche, the statement
said, was born on the
31st March 1980 and
hails from Aiodio in Otikpa
District of Ogbadiibo,
Benue State.
The statement went on:
“He joined Channels
Television 3 years ago in
Abuja, the nations capital
from where he was
posted to Kano as our
correspondent.
“Enenche was a very
resourceful
correspondent and that
what would travel to all
parts of northern Nigeria
to report events from the
region.
“The 2005 graduate of
Mass Communication from
the Benue State
University was one of the
best and fearless young
reporters in the country
and his reportage has
added quality to Channels
Television coverage.
“Enenche’s hard work
won him Channels
Television’s 2011
Chairman’s Award.
“Channels Television is
saddened by this loss
and commiserates with
the Akogwu Family.”
Meanwhile, Edo State
governor, Comrade
Adams Oshiomhole, has
commiserated with the
chairman, management
and staff of Channels
Television over the
killing.
In a condolence message
by his chief press
secretary, Mr Peter
Okhiria, he said:
“Akogwu’s death is a sad
loss not only to
Oshiomhole’s family, the
Channels Television and
the Nigeria Union of
Journalists, but to the
entire nation going by the
report that he was a
dedicated and
hardworking reporter
who won an award from
his organization, just last
year.
“His death is even more
painful as he was
reportedly cut down in
cold blood in the line of
duty.
“I believe strongly that
Nigeria is all that we
have and we have a duty
to make it work.
“It is my fervent prayer
that the good Lord will
grant his soul and the
souls of others who died
in the violent attacks
eternal rest and give his
colleagues in Channels
Television the fortitude
to bear the loss. I also
pray God to comfort his
family and give them
courage and hope.”
