Kim Jong-un has been hailed ‘Supreme Commander’ of North Korea’s military.
The new title, announced by national media, is another sign that he is consolidating his grip on power after Kim Jong-il’s death.
The younger Kim, formerly known as the ‘Great Successor’, was already a four-star general despite not yet being 30.
In newly-released pictures, he is seen shedding a tear by the body of his father which is lying in state until Wednesday’s funeral service.
Scenes of unrestrained public grieving for Kim Jong-il continue. After 17 years of rule, he is said to have died of a heart attack last Saturday, at the age of 69.
Fresh fish has been supplied to citizens of Pyongyang in what they claimed was a sign of the late ruler’s concern for his people until his dying day. The frozen pollocks and herrings are a luxury in a country where millions live in poverty.
